If you are new to owning a hearing aid, you might not be familiar with all of the issues that may arise with the device over time. Like with any other piece of technology, it is essential for you to maintain and care for it over time and there will be some wear and tear throughout the years.

There are many small issues that you will notice with your hearing aid during ownership, and one of the main issues is the one we will be discussing today.

What happens when your hearing aid won’t turn on?

Today we want to discuss what you should do when your hearing aid won’t turn on and how you can ensure that your hearing aid is fixed and will stand the test of time.

Change the battery

The first thing you should try when your hearing aid doesn’t turn on is changing the battery. The battery life of your hearing aid will be limited, and it is important for you to change the battery when you first notice your hearing aid doesn’t turn on. If this initial step doesn’t work, you will need to look for other causes of the issue.

Check the battery orientation

The second thing to double-check when your hearing aid doesn’t work is to see if the battery is the right way up. Ensure that the positive side of the battery is facing up, and if this is the case and the hearing aid isn’t working – you can move onto the next troubleshooting step.

Check the volume

There will be times where you might accidentally turn the volume down on your hearing aid without realizing it – and this is a common cause for your hearing aid seeming to not work. Check that the volume is turned up on your hearing aid and hopefully, this will be a quick fix for the issue.

Check for wax

A common reason why your hearing aid isn’t working is due to dirt and wax buildup in the tip of the hearing aid. When you are performing your troubleshooting checks on your hearing aid, take a moment to look for any wax or dirt that might be blocking the sound from coming out of your hearing aid. If you notice dirt or wax, clean this with your cleaning tool and check your manual to find out how to change the wax filters on the hearing aid. Once you have done all of this, you should be able to hear again.

See a professional

If you have tried all of these steps and your hearing aid is still not working, now is the time for you to see a professional for repairs. Often there might be a structural issue that you cannot access, and by taking it to your local hearing aid professional, they will be able to examine the hearing aid and discover why it isn’t working. Once they have managed to fix it, they will give it back to you, and you’ll have a hearing aid that functions perfectly once more.
